Poll: Should preparation for sacraments remain the job of teachers?

Over 70 per cent of primary school teachers have said that they are spending longer than allocated on preparation for First Holy Communion and Confirmation. Should this be changed?

OVER 70 PER CENT of primary school teachers are spending more time than is allocated in the preparation for sacraments, including First Holy Communion and Confirmation, a survey by the INTO has revealed.

A similar INTO survey in 2002 reported that only 20 per cent of teachers reported overruns in this regard.

With the number of priests in Ireland falling, can anyone else be expected to provide the necessary preparation?

So today we ask: Should preparation for sacraments remain the job of teachers?

Poll Results:

I don't know (1157)
No (1006)
Yes, but less time should be devoted to it (287)
Yes, regardless of overruns (109)
