EACH WEEK, WE highlight five apps that are worth downloading for your smartphone and tablet. There are a lot of apps released on a daily basis, but not all of them are worth paying attention to.
This week features a way to get yourself properly organised, a photo app which only reveal them a day later and a one-dot smash.
Glass Planner
For: iOS
Cost: Free
- Organising your day-to-day life can be testing at the best of times. You have enough to keep up to date with, not to mention the planning for later days, and sometimes calendar view doesn’t help.
- Glass Planner breaks this up into two sections. The top has a traditional calendar while the bottom shows all your to-do list.
- One of the nice things about this app is its accessibility. You start off with a reduced feature set to help you get acquainted faster and as you learn the basics, more features are unlocked.
- The style is simple and clear so there’s no confusion as to what day or task you need to get done. It’s streamlined so you’re not distracted by future events or the past, you just focus on what tasks you have scheduled.
- Handy for those who want a little more organisation in their lives.
ProShot
For: Windows Phone
Cost: €2.99 (trial version available)
- The standard camera app you get on Lumia devices is pretty good, but sometimes you need something with a little more functionality.
- That’s where ProShot comes in, giving you extra functionality for when you need it.
- Pretty much every photo setting and mode you can think of is available here. Burst mode, HDR, ISO, Aspect Ratio and so on.
- The update has added a number of new improvements to the app including startup speed and changes to the interface.
- A powerful camera app for those who need it.
FlashGap
For: iOS, Android
Cost: Free
- Depending on your perspective, this app will either be a source of hilarity, terror or embarrassment for you and your friends.
- The concept of FlashGap is about you and your friends taking photos for a shared album, except you don’t get to see them until the next day.
- Once you start the timer, all photos and/or videos taken will disappear in three seconds. You won’t be able to see them until noon the next day.
- Setting up invites is easy and provided you have a decent group of friends together, you can get a decent album together.
- If you want to add an extra twist to nights out or social gatherings, this has the potential to be a lot of fun (or terrifying, again depending on your friends).
Infinit
For: iOS, Android
Cost: Free
- Sending large files to your friends online isn’t the easiest prospect, especially when it’s large files like HD videos or a collection of images.
- Infinit is a file-transfer service which allows P2P sharing (i.e. you can share files between friends) for large files.
- Files sent over don’t need to be compressed and it claims to be 30x faster than using the cloud. We didn’t quite find that to be the case, but it’s still quicker than most cloud-based services.
- There are also Windows and Mac versions available to download so you can be multiplatform when required.
- Now you have a way to share those large video files without having to go through Dropbox or Google Drive.
Boom Dots
For: iOS, Android
Cost: Free
- Boom Dots is a bit of a weird one. It’s a one-tap game, but the concept is basically smashing your dot against another moving dot.
- The aim is to get as high a score as possible and get the timing right, otherwise you hit the spikes above. Take too long and the spikes below will get you instead.
- This is more difficult in practice than in theory. Different movement speeds and distances means figuring out the right time to fire is always challenging.
- There are different missions to complete, but really, it’s breaking your high score that’s the main appeal.
- A fun and quick distraction.
