EACH WEEK, WE highlight five apps that are worth downloading for your smartphone and tablet. There are a lot of apps released on a daily basis, but not all of them are worth paying attention to.
This week features and a way to keep messages short and sweet, a versatile photo effects editor and a fantastic cartoon RPG.
Pip
For: iOS (Android version coming soon)
Cost: Free
- Remember Yo! from a couple of months ago? Well, this follows the same concept but it expands on it significantly.
- Pip allows you to send short snappy responses and replies to any of your friends.
- Before you could only choose from a number of pre-determined options, but the latest update allows you to create your own short replies.
- You can also add emojis, different languages and customise them so you can pick them out easily.
- If you and your friends have messaging down to a fine art, then this will help out.

For: Windows Phone
Cost: Free
- The developer behind this, Rudy Huyn, is famous for releasing Windows Phone versions of popular iOS and Android apps. His Snapchat app was taken down after complaints, but that hasn’t stopped him from releasing another version.
- This one focuses on Snapchat Discover and it’s as fast and as efficient as the official version.
- Pretty much everything you expect from the service is available here. Different publications, images, text, embedded videos, etc.
- The only thing is the connection can be hit and miss. Sometimes it will load up stories without any problem, other times it will tell you it can’t connect despite everything else working normally.
- If you really feel like you’re missing out, you should download it now (before Snapchat removes it).
Defqt – Camera filters and effects
For: iOS
Cost: Free
- So you had the likes of Layout from Instagram being released, but what if you wanted something similar but a little more advanced.
- That’s where the weirdly named Defqt which allows you to create new types of images and different looks using numerous effects. It’s worth mentioning that you would want to have a more recent iPhone (5S onwards recommended) as it requires a lot of memory to work.
- Some of the images you can create can look pretty trippy, and for the free filters that are there, you can create some unique images with your current photos.
- There are additional effects, but some of them like infinity will cost you. It only costs €0.99 to unlock them mind.
- If you like the idea of Instagram’s Layout but find it too limiting.
GAM Messenger
For: iOS, Android
Cost: Free
- So we already have Pip earlier which boils messaging down to short phrases, but what does GAM offer?
- It too offers short and concise messaging, but instead of short phrases, you’re given a limited amount of time to message
- Once you get your friend’s (or contact’s) attention and they tell you they’ve time to respond, you have a minute to chat with them via messaging.
- If your contact doesn’t accept your invitation, then the message you’ve sent is deleted so your conversations are kept private.
- Useful if you prioritise short and quick replies above all else.
Attack the Light
For: iOS, Android
Cost: €2.99 (iOS),€3.42 (Android)
- Even if you don’t know the Cartoon Network show this game is based on, don’t let that put you off. You’ll be missing out if you do.
- Attack the Light is much like Angry Birds RPG in mechanics, but that’s where the similarities end. It’s starts off light and accessible, but it manages to become a deep and engrossing game.
- Combat is varied yet accessible, timed taps help you when you attack and defend, and the story is silly but fun.
- Once you get used to it, you uncover a tactical and clever game that is able to poke fun at itself and RPG conventions. Attack the Light is brimming with personality and it helps make a great game even better.
- A quirky title that easily one of the best smartphone RPGs out there.
