The 5 at 5 5 minutes, 5 stories, 5 o’clock…

EACH WEEKDAY EVENING, TheJournal.ie brings you five things you need to know before you head out the door.

1.#DEBT Finance Minister Michael Noonan has said that if he was to describe Ireland in one word, he would use the word ‘debt’. Meanwhile, the CEO of the National Treasury Management Agency John Corrigan said that Ireland is “on target” to exit the bailout programme. Their comments came as Ireland sold another batch of €500million three-month government bonds.

2. #MAGDALENES A group representing Magdalene survivors has called on Catholics to boycott mass this weekend following the refusal of four religious orders to pay financial compensation to the women. They are also asking people to withhold donations to local churches as a show of solidarity.

3. #EXPELLED Independent TD Denis Naughten has said it would be “common courtesy” for him to be informed that he was being removed from the Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children. He says he was expelled on the grounds that he asked for a vote during the report stage on the Protection of Life During Pregnancy Bill 2013.

4. #GPS Doctors have said they are close to “breaking point” because of government cuts, and the National Association for General Practitioners has warned that budget reductions are severely undermining primary care and GP services. They say that up to eight per cent of GP practices could close as a result.

5. #SWIPE A tip jar was swiped in a Dublin coffee shop yesterday – and a video appears to show a man putting the jar into a black bag before walking away. The video has led to other businesses saying that they have experienced similar problems.
