The 5 at 5 5 minutes, 5 stories, 5 o’clock…

EACH WEEKDAY EVENING, TheJournal.ie brings you five things you should know before you head out the door…

1. #BAILOUT Taoiseach Enda Kenny has confirmed that Ireland will exit the bailout without a credit line, saying that it is the “right decision”. Fianna Fail has said that while this is good news, the country still needs a lifejacket ‘for choppy waters’.

2. #CHILDREN IN CARE Nine children who were in care or ‘known to the HSE’ died by suicide last year, according to newly-released figures. One child was murdered while in HSE aftercare.

3. #THE TROUBLES A new Panorama documentary will detail how the British army allegedly ran a secret undercover unit during the Troubles. Panorama says it has uncovered evidence that some of the members killed unarmed civilians. Britain’s Ministry of Defence has referred the allegations to police.

4. #FREED The three Halawa sisters have been released after three months in custody in Egypt. However, their brother Ibrahim remains in detention. The sisters’ release came following intervention by the Irish government.

5. #BOSTON James ‘Whitey’ Bulger (84) has been sentenced in a US court to life for murder, extortion and money-laundering. His crimes were described as “almost unfathomable”, but Bulger has called his trial a “sham”.
