The 5 at 5 5 minutes, 5 stories, 5 o’clock…

EVERY WEEKDAY EVENING TheJournal.ie brings you the five stories you need to know before you head out the door.

1. #CROKE PARK: The government is to contact unions in the coming days to see if a deal can be reached on the public sector pay bill after the failure of the Croke Park deal last week. The government said today it still plans to cut €300 million from public pay this year, and has asked the head of the Labour Relations Commission to see if unions are willing to negotiate.

2. #SEX ABUSE: Gardaí are investigating allegations by two men who say that they were abused by a prominent Waterford sports coach when they were teenagers in the 1980s. The sports coach, now in his 60s, has had his home searched and some material has been seized by Gardaí.

3. #CARD DETAILS: Shops in Dublin are being targeted by scammers trying to get credit and debit card pin numbers from customers. The scam is being run by the same group that ran a similar scam last June, according to the Irish Payment Services Organisation.

4. #ASYLUM SEEKERS: Ireland’s system for dealing with asylum seekers needs to be radically overhauled – so say groups campaigning against the Direct Provision system, which has been criticised today for its ‘human, financial and social cost’.

5. #CAR CHASE: Five people were arrested in the early hours of this morning following a high-speed car chase in west Dublin which involved the Garda helicopter. The car was eventually stopped using a stinger device to puncture the vehicle’s tyres. Three of the five people involved have been charged.
