The 5 at 5 5 minutes, 5 stories, 5 o’clock…

EVERY WEEKDAY EVENING, TheJournal.ie brings you the five stories you need to know before you head out the door.

1. #SAVITA: The fallout following the death of Savita Halappanavar in a hospital in Galway has continued today, with Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore calling for legal “clarity” on Ireland’s abortion laws so that doctors feel more secure about the procedures they can offer. The Savita scandal has made headlines around the world, while the Indian government has expressed “concern” over her death.

2. #JOBSWATCH: Disappointing news on the jobs front this evening. Liberty Insurance, the new incarnation of Quinn Insurance, has announced it will cut 285 jobs from its facilities in Dublin, Cavan and Enniskillen. The cuts comes as the insurer enters the Northern Irish and British markets by acquiring the renewal rights to previous Quinn policies in those jurisdictions.

3. #COURTS: The High Court has awarded €2.8 million in damages to a woman who was raped and sexually abused by her uncle-in-law, who is also her godfather, when she was a child. RTÉ reports how Marcella Breslin successfully sued over the abuse, which occurred while she was between the ages of 12 and 16.

4. #AUCTION: The state has raised €855 million in an auction of its mobile phone spectrum space. The country’s four mobile operators will pay €482 million up front for the right to rent spectrum space until 2030, with the reminder in annual instalments. Some of the space auctioned off only came available through the analogue switch-off – and the new space is expected to pave the way for high-speed mobile broadband.

5. #ARREST: A man has been arrested as part of Garda investigations into a murder in Clondalkin last year. The man, in his 40s, is being questioned over the killing of Dean Johnson, who was shot and killed as he sat in his car in May 2011. Nobody has ever been charged with Johnson’s murder.
