The 5 at 5 5 minutes, 5 stories, 5 o’clock…

EVERY WEEKDAY EVENING, TheJournal.ie brings you the five stories you need to know before you hit the road.

1. #BAILOUT The IMF has criticised the Government’s plans to boost mortgage lending by guaranteeing borrowings. In a report, it broadly endorsed the Government’s economic strategy, but warned against measures contained in its Construction 2020 strategy.

2. #SOCIAL MEDIA The High Court has referred a case about Facebook‘s involvement with PRISM to the European Court of Justice. Judge Gerard Hogan decided to uphold a decision made by the Data Protection Commissioner Billy Hawkes not to investigate complaints made against Facebook.

3. #ON YOUR BIKE Dublinbikes celebrated signing a €2m deal with Coca-Cola Zero today (though not everyone was happy). It’s a far cry from when the plan was first mooted, when it was met with cynicism.

4. #NIGERIA At least 21 people are dead after a bomb attack on a World Cup viewing centre in Nigeria. It is believed Boko Haram is behind the attack, and the bomb appeared to have been hidden in a rickshaw outside the building.

5. #OLYMPICS Golfer Rory McIlroy announced today that he has declared for Ireland ahead of the 2016 Olympics in Rio. He made the announcement in Cork a day before the Irish Open kicked off, saying: “I just thought it was the right thing to do”.
