6 of the best… banana breads for a fuss-free wholesome treat

The perfect January indulgence – and made with store-cupboard ingredients too.

BANANA BREAD IS one of those recipes that you can easily make anytime, anywhere, without any fuss or need for complex kitchen equipment.

One of the few requirements for making a good banana bread is in the bananas (shock!) – ripe or overripe bananas work best, so, if you have a couple of bananas that are rapidly turning a brownish colour, it’s time to get baking!

Banana bread can lend itself very well to taking on other flavours- whether it’s chocolate, cinnamon or coffee- so it can be fun to get create and play around with inventive flavour combinations. We’ve listed some of our favourites below.

1. Cinnamon and Ginger Banana Bread, from Melissa Hemsley:
Whether you’re doing #Veganuary or not, this dairy and egg free recipe sounds like it packs a real flavour punch and is definitely going on our weekend bake list!

2. Turmeric and Cacao Banana Bread, from the Irish Balance: A vibrantly coloured banana bread with added health benefits of cacao and turmeric. Serve toasted with peanut butter for a healthy sweet treat!

3. Espresso Banana Bread, from Eat by Chloe: Love coffee and love bananas? A bit of espresso powder adds the perfect kick to this healthy banana bread recipe. Perfect for a mid morning snack or breakfast on the go.

4. Classic Banana Bread, from Elizabeth’s Kitchen Diary: A sweet, buttery banana bread that would be a delicious tea time treat! This recipe uses simple, store cupboard ingredients so it would be a great recipe to whip up in a hurry.

5. Treacle, Ginger and Oat Banana Bread, from Wholesome Ireland: The inclusion of oats in place of flour make this banana bread lower GI and lower in fat than most conventional recipes. On the off chance you’ve any left over, this bread can also be frozen.

6. Chocolate Orange Banana Bread Traybake, from Frugal Feeding: While still preserving the flavour of a classic banana bread, this traybake has a slightly cake-ier texture, with the welcome addition of orange chocolate.
