The 9 at 9 Trump assassination attempt, Huw Edwards trial and scam Irish products

LAST UPDATE | 16 Sep

EVERY MORNING, The Journal brings you all the news you need to know as you start the day.

Trump

1. Donald Trump is safe and a suspect is in custody after an apparent assassination attempt on the former US president, according to police in Florida and his campaign team.

Sentencing

2. Former BBC presenter Huw Edwards is due to be sentenced for accessing indecent images of children as young as seven.

The veteran broadcaster admitted three charges of “making” indecent photographs after he was sent 41 illegal images by convicted paedophile Alex Williams over WhatsApp.

Scams

3. A new online scam involving ads for discount clothes and leather handbags sold by fake retailers is being pushed to social media users in Ireland.

The sophisticated scam, which involves a string of similar ads on Facebook and Instagram, has been operating in Ireland for a number of months.

College accommodation

4. The housing crisis has made it more difficult for students to find somewhere to live during their third-level education.

Each year, the scramble for accommodation often sees students facing paying high rents or making long commutes to and from college due to the limited options available to them.

TikTok

5. TikTok will attempt to convince a federal court that a law requiring the video-sharing app to divest from its Chinese ownership or face a ban in the United States is unconstitutional.

The fate of Americans’ access to TikTok has become a prominent issue in the country’s political debate, with Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump opposing any ban of the wildly popular app.

RIP

6. TITO JACKSON OF the Jackson 5 has died at the age of 70. Tito was the third of nine Jackson children, with siblings including global superstars Michael and Janet.

Emmys

7. Japanese historical drama Shogun has secured top gongs at the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards, alongside The Bear and Baby Reindeer.

The ceremony at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles featured a handful of TV reunions including father and son hosts Eugene and Dan Levy with their Schitt’s Creek co-stars Catherine O’Hara and Annie Murphy, as well as the cast of drama West Wing.

‘Traitors’

8. Mary Lou McDonald has said it is very clear “who, in fact, the traitors are”, after she was asked on RTÉ Radio about videos of her party’s local election candidates being chased out of neighbourhoods during the campaign earlier this year.

“Traitor” has become a common refrain on the far right fringe in Ireland when referring to politicians, and in particular it has been directed against Sinn Féin.

EU horsetrading

9. EU Commissioner for the Internal Market Thierry Breton has resigned and accused Commission President Ursula von der Leyen of asking France to withdraw his candidacy for the incoming executive.
