1. #MONAGHAN A man in his 50s was fatally injured when the car he was driving left the road and collided with a wooden fence. A female passenger was uninjured.

2. #FOSTER CARE A young child was taken from their grandparents and put into foster care because of the couple’s age. The grandparents were told they will never be approved as foster parents.

3. #SCHOOLS A consultation process is now underway to develop an education strategy for the next three years. Organisations have been asked to make submissions by 8 June.

4. #AUSTRIA The results of an election in Austria are due today, and could see Norbert Hofer of the Freedom Party becoming the EU’s first far-right head of state. Last night, the vote was evenly split between him and Green-backed Alexander van der Bellen.

5. #LUAS Luas security staff – who are employed by a private firm – are to vote on strike action after they rejected a 6% pay increase that was recommended by the Labour court.

6. #CRISIS The first World Humanitarian Summit is taking place today, and is being addressed by President Michael D Higgins. The summit aims to address humanitarian issues including the current migrant crisis.

7. #KINGSMILL An inquest into Northern Ireland’s Kingsmill massacre – the sectarian murder of Protestant workman by the IRA in 1976 – is to open today.

8. #FALLUJAH The Iraqi Prime Minister has announced an offensive to take Fallujah from Islamic State.  A major operation is set to begin in the city, which has been in IS hands since 2014.

9. #FAT PLEASE A new study from the National Obesity Forum and the Public Health Collaboration says that advice saying a low-fat diet is good for cholesterol is wrong. It has called for a return to ‘whole foods’ such as meat, fish and dairy, as well as high-fat foods like avocados.
