Here’s all the news you need to know as you start your day.
1. A new supercomputer based in Iceland should enable Met Éireann to deliver more accurate forecasts at a higher frequency from the spring of 2024, according to the agency’s head forecaster in an interview with The Journal.
Met Éireann, along with meteorological agencies in three other countries, is almost ready to start operating a supercomputer acquired in 2021 after months of testing and preparing the machine to create highly up-to-date weather predictions.
2. The EU has failed to agree on a €50 billion aid package for Ukraine, even after deciding to open accession negotiations with the war-torn country.
The aid was vetoed by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban yesterday, delivering another tough blow to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy after he failed this week to persuade US politicians to approve an additional $61 billion, mainly to buy weapons from the US.
3. A total of fourteen people are due before the Courts of Criminal Justice and Swords District Court today for 23 separate charges relating to shoplifting.
The group of 13 males and one female were arrested as part of Operation Táirge, a criminal investigation by gardaí targeting commercial premises inside Dublin’s North inner-city.
4. Guyana and Venezuela have promised not to use threats or force against each other, but talks held yesterday failed to reach an agreement in a bitter dispute over a vast border region rich with oil and minerals.
A joint commission composed of the foreign ministers of both countries and other officials will address the problem with a report expected within three months.
5. Presenter Ryan Tubridy was paid over €25,000 by public broadcaster RTÉ while he was off air earlier this year following revelations about secret payments made to him by the national broadcaster, that meant his pay exceeded his publicly reported salary.
Documents provided to the Oireachtas Public Accounts Committee show that Tubridy had negotiated a radio contract with RTÉ securing his pay after his time at the helm of the Late Late Show ended.
6. At least eleven Iranian police officers were killed in a jihadist-claimed attack on a police station in the southeastern province of Sistan-Baluchistan, an official told state television on Friday.
“In the terrorist attack on the police headquarters in the town of Rask, 11 policemen were killed, and others were wounded,” said Alireza Marhamati, deputy governor of the province.
A number of assailants were also killed in a shootout that ensued with the security forces, the television channel reported.
7. A British schoolboy who was believed to have been abducted by his mother six years ago has been found in France.
Alex Batty, who is now 17, went missing in 2017 after going on a family holiday to Spain.
Detectives believed Alex was abducted by his mother Melanie Batty to live an “alternative” lifestyle abroad.
8. A person has died while another is in a critical condition after a migrant boat sank in the English Channel, the French national coastguard has said.
The coastguard was alerted to a boat with more than 60 passengers thought to be migrants on board in difficulty around 8km off the northern French coast yesterday night.
A rescue ship arrived in under 30 minutes and found one of the boat’s tubes was deflated and people in the water, the agency said.
9. The Israeli army has said it recovered and returned the body of French-Israeli hostage Elya Toledano, who was kidnapped and taken to Gaza by militants during Hamas’s 7 October attacks.
Toledano, 28, was among an estimated 240 people taken hostage during the Hamas attacks on Israel, which were the deadliest in the country’s history.

And back in Ireland, despite empty churches, we will have a 90% plus Catholic rate in the next census.
Sean, Ireland didn’t even have a 90% Catholic rate in the last census so not sure how you are coming up with that number.
The next census will likely show it in the 70% area,
Of course you are right, a large percentage of the Irish population in Ireland still consider themselves Catholic even though they don’t believe in many of the Catholic churches main teachings for example, Mary being a Virgin, that when you take communion you are actually eating Jesus and most certainly do not agree with the church’s frankly outdated and backward views on sex before marriage, condom use and other issues like divorce and marriage equality.
What’s even more strange is back in around 2010 the Catholic Bishops commissioned a survey in relation to the people that do actually go to mass. They found that approx 10% of mass going Catholics don’t even believe in a God.
It seems some people are so desperate to fit in with the community or keep their partners, husbands/wife’s, parents or grandparents happy that they’ll do the mass stuff even when they don’t believe in the all power got that the Catholic Church bases it’s entire believe structure on.
It was around 84% last time.

Sean could not agree more I’m a firm believer that the school system is the last hold they have on Irish society. The census will only give you figures on the question asked. I’d like them to ask did you Christian your child to guarantee a place in your local government school. And if you are a Catholics are you a practicing Catholic. Because the figures don’t match reality.

The last census is a false memory. The universe began last Thursday.
Surveys since the last census have shown that the majority of catholics are actually protestants. They don’t even believe in transubstantiation.
Some are not even christians. They don’t believe in heaven and hell.
And something like 8% are not even theists, they don’t believe in god.
A lot of people identify as catholic as a cultural in-group identification and nothing to do with the religion.

And it had dropped from about 91-2% from memory, but that didn’t stop the newspapers reporting instead that the number of catholics had increased, which was technically true but the population increased in size, but grossly misleading.

Actually the economist did an interesting piece about the perceptions of the number of Muslims vs. the actual population in different european countries. The media driven perception of Europe being ‘over run with Muslims’ has lead people to believing the numbers are at least 2-3 times the actual.

You ignored the fact that ‘first world’ countries like the USA has one of the largest % of Christian population in the world at around 70% so your theory they will only succeed in developing countries doesn’t really stack up. Personally I find the whole area of which invisible man in the sky is the best to seem incredibly immature but there’s no denying a lot of populations around the world still want to follow religious beliefs.
I’ve no religious affiliations but if given a choice between Catholicism or the rapid spread of the fascist Ideology of Islam and its millions of ignorant and brainwashed adherents, Catholicism would win hands down.
I referred in particular to the Roman Catholics of the Christian world as that’s the religion I and most of Ireland are familier with most.

Looks also like Christianity is being shifted from Europe to the U.S. and the U.S. don’t mind fighting their wars in Europe.
The headline is very misleading. The number of Christians continue to grow. Still the same percentage, and increasing later.
But Europe continues to trade it’s inheritance for a pigs ear. The reality is that Europe is in such a mess with ideologies, it will shortly be ripe for conversion, the only question is will it flee back to Christianity, or will it be overrun by Muslims.
Historically, when Christianity is been abandoned, God raises up Saints with the gifts necessary for reconversion.
