The 9 at 9 Oasis plan Croke Park gigs as the Gallaghers reform, Amnesty reports on camp bombing – and how Ireland is pushing Nigerian dairy farmers out of business.

LAST UPDATE | 27 Aug

GOOD MORNING.

The Journal brings you the top stories to start your morning.

Gaza

1. The Israeli military “failed to take all feasible precautions to avoid or minimise harm to civilians” when carrying out two attacks on a camp for displaced Palestinians in Rafah, Southern Gaza, in May, an investigation by Amnesty International has concluded.

The humanitarian organisation has called for a separate war crime investigation to be launched by the International Criminal Court following the conclusions by the independent probe.

A total of 36 civilians were killed after Israel dropped two bombs on the Kuwaiti Peace Camp, located in Rafah’s humanitarian zone.

Ireland and West Africa

2. In our main story this morning, Noteworthy looks at how cheap substitute “milk” exported from Europe into West Africa is hurting the region’s local dairy industry.

A collaborative investigation by Noteworthy and Nigerian news outlet Premium Times into Irish dairy in Nigeria has found that large volumes of cheap European exports into West Africa have outcompeted local milk on price.

This, according to NGOs and traders, has pushed many Nigerian dairy farmers out of business.

Oasis

3. Oasis have confirmed they’re reforming to play the band’s first gigs in 15 years.

On the band’s website this morning, the band announced a spate of gigs for next summer – with two nights in Dublin’s Croke Park among the schedule.

Russian bombardment of Ukraine

4. The Irish government has “just scraped a B- overall grade” when it comes to fulfilling its promises to address climate change and protect the environment, according to an independent assessment commissioned by environmental organisation Friends of the Earth.

However, the experts who carried out the assessment said that the climate action pledges made by the Government were not ambitious enough to begin with.

Russian bombardment of Ukraine

5. Russia launched massive drone and missile barrages across Ukraine yesterday, continuing overnight and into this morning.

It appeared to target energy infrastructure and looked set to be Russia’s biggest attack against Ukraine in weeks.

Simon in Paris

6. Taoiseach Simon Harris is Paris today for a meeting with French president Emmanuel Macron.

The two are set to discuss Irish-French relations and EU issues as part of the bilateral meeting, with the conflicts in Ukraine and in the Middle East are also on the agenda.

Trump classified documents case

7. A prosecutor has urged a US appeals court to revive the classified documents case against Donald Trump that was thrown out by a federal judge.

Trump allegedly kept classified documents — which included records from the Pentagon and CIA — unsecured at his Mar-a-Lago home in Florida and thwarted efforts to retrieve them.

East London blaze

8. Residents of an east London flat block were evacuated in the early hours of yesterday morning when their building was engulfed by a “nightmare” fire.

All persons have been accounted for after the blaze broke out at the multi-storey building in Dagenham which had “a number of known” fire safety issues, according to a spokesperson for London Fire Brigade.

More portals, more cities

9. Dublin City Council has announced that two cities have been added to the Portal network to be livestreamed into the capital.

The Portal, located on North Earl St in Dublin City centre, will now feature livestreams from Vilnius, Lithuania, and Lublin, Poland, alongside the already existing stream with New York.
