The 9 at 9 Gerry Hutch arrested in Spain, woman charged with murder of Carlow man and ‘anti-wind’ plans putting energy targets at risk.

LAST UPDATE | 24 Oct

GOOD MORNING.

Here’s all the news you need to know as you start the day.

Spain

1. Police in Spain have arrested Gerard ‘The Monk’ Hutch, following searches at ten locations targeting assets suspected to be owned by members of the Hutch gang.

Authorities from the Guardia Civil carried out searches yesterday with assistance from members of the Garda National Bureau of Criminal Investigation.

Domestic violence

2. A new report has found that abusive partners of disabled women use their positions as carers to withhold medication and deny basic care and mobility needs.

Abusive partners are also using impairments to portray disabled women as unfit parents and inflict verbal and physical abuse that targets their disability.

Energy

3. “Anti-wind” county development plans, that rezone land allocated for onshore wind farm projects, are increasing the risk that Ireland’s renewable energy targets will be missed, the industry has claimed.

Wind Energy Ireland, a renewable energy lobby group, are calling on An Bord Pleanála to make decisions in the context of national climate and energy security commitments and pleading with local authorities to identify suitable land for wind farms.

Courts

4. A Carlow woman in her 30s has appeared before a special sitting of the local District court charged with the murder of a man in the town this week.

Sabrina Kehoe, with an address at St Mary’s Park, Carlow town, was brought before Judge Geraldine Carthy last night.

Assisted dying

5. The Dáil has voted in favour of a report completed by the Oireachtas Committee on Assisted Dying.

A total of 76 TDs last night voted in favour of the report, while 53 TDs voted against. The vote was largely split among the government benches.

Lebanon

6. Hezbollah has confirmed that Hashem Safieddine, one of its leading figures who was widely expected to succeed Hassan Nasrallah, was killed in an Israeli air strike.

The announcement came a day after Israel said it had killed Safieddine in a strike earlier this month in Beirut’s southern suburbs.

UN report

7. The proportion of women killed in conflict in 2023 was twice as high as the previous year, according to a UN report that denounced “oppressive patriarchal” structures and called out an increase in sexual violence in war zones.

In the annual “Women and Peace and Security” report, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres painted a stark picture showing how “progress made over decades is vanishing before our eyes”.

Dublin Circuit Criminal Court

8. A bank worker has been jailed for three years for money laundering and assisting organised crime.

The offences relate to an international criminal organisation called ‘The Black Axe’, Dublin Circuit Criminal Court has heard.

Status Yellow

9. Six counties in the west and southwest will come under a Status Yellow alert for rain later today.

The warning will kick in from 3pm this afternoon and impact counties Clare, Cork, Galway, Kerry, Limerick, and Mayo.
