1. In our main story this morning, Eoghan Dalton reports that the radio sector is lobbying to ensure new car models still have radios, amid fears the sector could be inadvertently “side-lined” due to car manufacturers replacing the humble radio with direct online access.
Michael Kelly from the Independent Broadcasters of Ireland said campaign efforts arose out of concern that the medium would no longer be “at the fingertips” of motorists in cars.
2. Climate change will likely increase hospital admissions, as a growing number of people are expected to fall ill due to high temperatures.
In the worst case scenario, there could be as many as 1,400 additional deaths per year in Ireland by the end of the century, according to new research by the Economic and Social Research Institute.
3. The Government has formally agreed to provide assistance to UK’s independent inquiry into the Omagh bombing.
The dissident republican bomb exploded in the Co Tyrone town on 15 August 1998, killing 29 people, including a woman pregnant with twins.
4. An Israeli strike hit a school-turned-shelter in southern Gaza on Tuesday as troops in the territory’s main city pushed on with a major offensive that has again displaced Palestinians.
A hospital source in Khan Younis in southern Gaza said at least 29 people were killed when the school was hit in nearby Abasan.
5. US President Joe Biden said Nato is “more powerful than ever” as he welcomed world leaders to Washington for a summit to mark the 75th anniversary of the military alliance.
The three days of events kicked off last night with Biden announcing a new air defence system for Ukraine.
6. An Irish woman has been charged with attempted suicide and consuming alcohol in the UAE city of Dubai, the Dáil has heard.
The case of Tori Towey was raised in the Dáil today by Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald, who called on Taoiseach Simon Harris to intervene and call in the UAE ambassador.
7. Major changes to the social welfare system, which will link payments to applicants’ work history, will commence later this year as a planned increases to PRSI are expected to kick in from 1 October.
The Pay-Related Benefit was today approved by by both houses of the Oireachtas and will be presented to the President for signing.
8. Two people have been hospitalised after a serious road traffic collision between a car and a lorry in Co Louth yesterday afternoon.
The incident took place at approximately 12.10pm today on the R173 Dundalk to Carlingford Road in Ballymascanlan.
9. The official trailer of the new Gladiator film starring Paul Mescal has been released.
Gladiator II, also starring Pedro Pascal and Denzel Washington, is a sequel to the 2000 hit Gladiator which featured Russell Crowe as its leading man.
