The 9 at 9 Gold for Kellie Harrington in Paris, minimum jail terms for life sentences and Harris and Walz take aim at Trump.

LAST UPDATE | 7 Aug

GOOD MORNING.

Here’s all the news you need to know as you start your day.

Double Olympic champion

1. Kellie Harrington successfully defended her Olympic lightweight (60kg) title last night as she beat China’s Yang Wenlu to claim her second Gold medal at the Stade Roland Garros in Paris.

The win makes Harrington the first Irish woman, and first Irish boxer, to defend an Olympic title.

Life sentences

2. Proposed legislation that would allow judges to recommend minimum prison terms when handing down life sentences has been approved by Cabinet, the Government has announced.

Minister for Justice Helen McEntee has today published a general scheme of the Life Sentences Bill 2024, which will now pass to the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice for pre-legislative scrutiny.

US election

3. Kamala Harris introduced her running mate Tim Walz as “a leader who will help unite our nation” as the pair appeared together for the first time at a rally in Pennsylvania.

The Minnesota governor took the stage with the US Vice President in the crucial swing state of Pennsylvania, and signaled his intent to press the case aggressively against Trump.

Abtran

4. Workers at Cork-based outsourcing company Abtran have said that the company are refusing to allow union representatives into disciplinary hearings.

In May, workers launched a pay claim with the company, requesting a wage increase to €15 per hour. Last month, the IWU announced that its members were balloting for potential industrial action, with results expected this week.

Belfast

5. Police in Northern Ireland have said they are investigating a number of racially motivated hate crimes in Belfast, including an attack on a young boy.

The PSNI came under attack and businesses were targeted during anti-immigration violence in the city.

Celbridge

6. A young man has died in a single-vehicle crash in Co Kildare.

The incident occurred on the Clane Road (R403) in Celbridge at around 10.30pm last night.

Hamas

7. Hamas announced that Yahya Sinwar has taken over as the organisation’s political chief, replacing Ismail Haniyeh who was killed in a strike in Tehran last month.

A statement from the Ezzedine Al-Qassam Brigades, Hamas’ armed wing, said they had fired a barrage of rockets at Israel to coincide with the announcement.

Monaghan

8. Tributes are being paid to a national school pupil who died in a farming tragedy in Co Monaghan at the weekend.

The HSA confirmed they are investigating a quad bike accident involving the young boy.

Olympics Daly

9. Kellie Harrington has done it: she has become the first Irish Olympian to successfully defend their title since, well, Friday. Let’s say she’s only the second to do it since 1932.

Gav and Sinéad were both in Roland-Garros to see the crowning moment of her farewell, and report on what it felt like in the moment and what it means to Kellie, who said that, “this one’s for me”.
