2. #PERU Irish woman Michaella McCollum Connolly and Scottish woman Melissa Reid were expected to appear in court in Peru today over a drugs find. However, former honorary consul of Ireland in Peru, Michael Russell, says they won’t appear in court until Friday or next Monday. They say they were forced to take the packages and did not know they contained drugs.

3. #999 Minister Leo Varadkar is said to be planning a change to the 999 emergency telephone system in the case of marine incidents. The Irish Times reports that the new system would see the expediting of emergency calls to services including the Irish Coast Guard.

4. #CANCER A major breakthrough in the fight against neuroblastoma, a childhood cancer, has been made by scientists in Trinity College, the Daily Mail reports. It says the scientists are optimistic their findings will lead to new treatments.

5. #EUROZONE New forecasts to be published today are expected to show that the Eurozone is exiting the recession, RTÉ reports. The statistics from Eurostat are anticipated to show a 0.2 per cent increase in output between April and June, compared to the first quarter, it said.

6. #EGYPT At least 17 people are reported to have been killed after Egyptian police tried to disperse two pro-Morsi protest camps in Cairo. Egypt’s interior ministry said two members of the security forces were also killed. Morsi’s Muslim Brotherhood urged Egyptians to take to the streets to denounce the “massacre”.

7. #ISRAEL The Israeli army says it has carried out an air strike and hit rocket-launching equipment in the Gaza Strip. It says no one was killed in the attack and that it was in response to a rocket fired into Israel yesterday by militants from the area.

8. #HSE The HSE had a gross deficit of €49.3 million to the end of May this year, according to its latest performance report. It says that its year-to-date expenditure is €5.161 billion, and it expects a deficit of over €100m by the end of this year.

9. #WEXFORD REFUGE A refuge in Wexford is under threat of being closed due to a lack of funding. A local campaign has begun to stop the refuge closing on 1 September for 13 weeks. A meeting last night saw a committee being formed and a protest march is being arranged in the town.
