1. #SHOOTING: A man has been seriously injured following a shooting at a shopping centre in Tallaght last night. The man was shot three times at St Dominic’s Shopping Centre at about 10pm last night and was later taken to Tallaght hospital where he is reported to be in a critical condition.
2. #FREE VOTE: Fianna Fáil is to examine a system that would allow TDs and Senators free votes on certain matters in the wake of its decision to allow a free vote on the upcoming abortion legislation. Micheál Martin admitted to TheJournal.ie last night that the decision to allow a free vote in this instance was because: “I didn’t want to lose people.”
3. #WHAT’S LEFT: Income levels are stabilising for the first time in two years according to the Irish League of Credit Unions’ ‘What’s Left’ tracker but there are still 1.7 million people in Ireland who have just €100 or less disposable income per month after essential bills have been paid
4. #TAXES: The amount of tax paid by US multinationals working in Ireland is in the spotlight this morning as the Irish Times reports that the medical products group Boston Scientific had an effective tax rate of 4 per cent in 2011. Colm Keena and Simon Carswell write that it is one of a number of Irish-incorporated subsidiaries that pay little or no tax on large sums going through Irish companies.
5. #GUYANA: An Irish teenager who was accused of threatening to shoot and kill the president of the small South American country of Guyana is to have charges against him dropped. Cillian James Crossan, 17, was working with the British aid group Project Trust when the incident happened in April.
6. #EL SALVADOR: A woman in the Central American country of El Salvador who suffers from lupus and kidney failure has been denied an abortion on the grounds her life is at risk by the country’s Supreme Court. The 22-year-old’s child is likely to die after childbirth, BBC News reports, and she will now likely undergo a C-section. Abortion is illegal under all circumstances in El Salvador.
7. #BOSTON BOMBING: The surviving suspect in the Boston bombings last month is now walking according to his mother. Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was shot and injured during the manhunt which claimed the life of his brother Tamerlan and is currently being held in a prison hospital. His mother Zubeidat Tsarnaeva also told Associated Press that her sons are innocent.
8. #OUCH: Communications Minister Pat Rabbitte is fond of the one-liners and his latest belter is a stinging rebuke of independent TD Mattie McGrath over his allegations in relation to Justice Minister Alan Shatter being stopped by gardaí. Rabbitte has told TheJournal.ie that McGrath “parliamentary wise, is about as useful as tits on a bull”.
9. #BLOOM: Finally, it’s the Bank Holiday weekend and the outlook on the weather front is good which means thousands across the country will be out and about enjoying the sunshine. Here’s what you can expect at one event, Bloom in the Park, in the Phoenix Park in Dublin.
