The 9 at 9 Nine things you need to know by 9am: Brian Lenihan says that measures agreed to in the EU-IMF bailout are open to change; Citywest businessman Jim Mansfield’s company goes into liquidation; and the HSE orders 100,000 more seasonal flu vaccines.

Every morning, TheJournal.ie brings you nine things you really need to know by 9am.

1. #BAILOUT: Measures agreed to in Ireland’s €85 billion EU-IMF bailout package are open to change, Minister for Finance Brain Lenihan said last night, following suggestions by Central Bank governor Patrick Honohan that the terms could be renegotiated.

The Irish Times reports that Honohan said a new government would have “quite a lot of flexibility” in moving away from measures already agreed – so long as any new policies had the same impact on State finances.

Lenihan agreed that changes to the deal could be brought in by a new government, but added that changing the interest rate on loans already drawn down was another matter.

2. #MANSFIELD: Businessman Jim Mansfield’s company went into liquidation last night, leaving a reported total of €192 million worth of debts to over 400 different companies.

The Irish Independent reports that Mansfield, whose personal wealth was estimated at €420 million in 2007, will  not be personally liable for the outstanding debts because of the structure of his business. Mansfield’s creditors include hundreds of small companies, which are owed over €14 million between them as well as Bank of Scotland Ireland (€140 million); Irish Nationwide Building Society (€11.6 million); and building contractor Swift Concepts (€23 million).

Creditors have been told that they could be waiting at least five years to be repaid.

3. #SWINE FLU: The Health Service Executive has ordered 100,000 extra seasonal flu vaccines for the country.

Meanwhile, Fine Gael’s spokesperson for health James O’Reilly has expressed concern over overcrowding in hospital emergency departments and increasing cases of swine flu.

O’Reilly said that “an unprecedented number of people” had been left for days on trolleys and plastic chairs in overcrowded emergency departments waiting for admission to hospital. He said this posed a significant risk for patients whose immune systems have been compromised – either through treatments for illnesses like cancer or because of existing conditions such as cystic fibrosis.

4. #BRRR: Motorists have been warned to exercise caution this weekend as ice and snow will make driving conditions treacherous on many of the county’s roads.

Counties Clare, Cork, Kerry, Limerick and Roscommon are among the worst affected by the snow. Sharp to severe ground frost and temperatures of -4C are expected over the weekend, however the cold weather is not expected to continue beyond this weekend.

5. #LONGFORD: A motorist in his 50s has died following a single vehicle collision in Co Longford last night.

It is believed that the man’s vehicle left the road and hit a ditch at Fostragh, near Aughnacliffe at around 8.20pm yesterday. Gardaí are appealing for witnesses.

6. #DRIVERS: More than 10,000 motorists from Northern Ireland are being sought by authorities for breaking traffic laws or failing to pay road tolls in the Republic.

This follows a cross-Border agreement which allows authorities in Northern Ireland and the Republic to share information on law-breaking motorists for the first time since March of last year, the Irish Times reports.

7. #FIANNA FAILURE: Fine Gael are feeling confident this morning after a poll showed the party is continuing to gain favour with the public.

A Red C poll carried out for Paddy Power bookmakers showed that Fine Gael stands at 35 per cent – compared with 34 per cent in a similar poll by the same company for the Sunday Business Post last month.

Meanwhile, support for Fianna Fáil has fallen to 14 per cent from 17 per cent a month ago. Support for Labour is now 21 per cent, and Sinn Féin’s support remains at 14 per cent.

8. #GERMANY: Authorities in Germany are investigating whether contaminated products were passed off as safe for use in animal feed, in an attempt to uncover the causes behind a dioxin scare that stopped the sale of eggs from over 4,700 farms.

Fatty acids supposed to be used for industrial purposes only were reportedly combined with feed made for laying hens, chickens, cattle and pigs. Dioxins can contribute to cancer and pose a particular risk to pregnant women. The authorities have said that the current scare does not pose a significant threat, however the extent of the contamination has not yet been confirmed.

9. #WHO KNEW? Women’s tears have a negative impact on men’s sexual desire, according to a new study.

The BBC reports that research carried out by the Weizmann Institute in Israel found that women’s tears contain a “chemical signal”, which reduces male arousal. Scientists first collected women’s tears (yes, really) and then asked male volunteers to look at their photographs. As the men viewed the photographs of the women, vials containing either genuine tears or a salt solution were placed under their noses.

The researchers found that levels of testosterone – a hormone related to sexual arousal – in the men’s saliva fell by an average of 13 per cent on average after they sniffed the tears but were unchanged after sniffing the salt solution.

Interestingly, the effect of a crying man on women’s sexual desire was not studied…
