The 9 at 9: Thursday

Bit of a cool start to the day this morning! Here are the nine things you need to know as you start your Thursday.

EVERY DAY, TheJournal.ie brings you nine things you need to know with your morning cup of coffee.

1. #KIDNAP: The Prime Minister of Libya was abducted overnight. Ali Zeidan was taken from his Tripoli hotel by armed men and taken to an unknown location. It comes five days after the US angered Libya’s government by capturing a senior Al-Qaeda suspect from the city.

2. #SAVITA: HIQA has pointed out ‘disturbing similarities’ between the case of Savita Halappanavar and that of Tania McCabe, who died in hospital in Drogheda in 2007 after going into septic shock. HIQA’s Phelim Quinn said the similarity between the two cases was “probably one of the most disturbing findings” of the agency’s report into Savita’s death.

3. IRA: ‘The IRA’ has claimed responsibility for the death of a man in north Belfast, according to a statement released to The Irish News. Kevin Kearney’s body was discovered yesterday in a city park. It’s the second death attributed to the dissident group, which came into existence last year after a merger between a number of smaller militant groups.

4. #AIR TRAFFIC: A number of flights have been cancelled today as a result of strike action by French air traffic controllers. Anyone heading to the airport is being advised to check their flight details in advance. However, the biggest impact is likely to be in southern France.

5. #CHOKING: Parents and young people are being warned of the dangers of what is referred to as “the choking game”. A teenage boy is seriously ill in a Dublin hospital after being involved in one of the ‘games,’ RTÉ is reporting.  In the US, 80 people have died from involvement in the practice.

6. #EGYPT: The US is suspending supply of cash and large military hardware to Egypt. Washington has confirmed it’s halting $260 million in cash aid, as well as shipments of large scale military systems like Apache helicopters and F-16 fighter jets. The move marks a dramatic break with years of unqualified support to Cairo.

7. #PLANE: In the UK, a pilot who fell ill at the controls of his aircraft – forcing his passenger to land the plane – has passed away, according to the BBC. Police say the man collapsed in the cockpit after take off, leaving the inexperienced passenger to make an emergency landing at Humberside Airport.

8. #NONE OF THE ABOVE: A new poll has found that most voters do not believe that any of the current political party leaders would ‘fight for them’. The survey published in the Irish Sun this morning shows that 56 per cent answered ‘none of them’ when asked: ‘Which party leader would fight for you?’

9. #CLINTON: Bill Clinton was in Ireland last night. In Dublin for various official engagements, the former US president also went out for dinner at a city centre restaurant, catching up with his old friend Bono, as well as golfer Rory McIlroy.
