The 9 at 9 Good morning! Here are the nine things you need to know as you start your Tuesday…

EVERY DAY, TheJournal.ie brings you nine things you need to know with your morning cup of coffee.

1. #STRIKE: Ireland’s first junior doctor strike in a quarter of a century began at 7am. More than 12,000 out-patient consultant appointments and 3,000 elective surgeries have been cancelled. The IMO has another stoppage planned for next week if the HSE doesn’t meet its demands on working hours.

2. #BUDGET: Ministers are meeting this morning to discuss the level of adjustment for Budget 2014. Ministers Michael Noonan and Brendan Howlin will present aggregate figures to their coalition colleagues ahead of next week’s public Dáil announcement.

3. #ASYLUM: Evidence of overcrowding, poor fire safety and other problems are highlighted in unpublished inspection records of accommodation centres for asylum seekers, The Irish Times is reporting. In one centre, according to the paper, a family of six were confined to a single bedroom.

4. #UP IN SMOKE : A plan prioritised by Health Minister James Reilly during Ireland’s EU Presidency could be scuppered today in a vote at the EU Parliament. European health ministers had agreed a raft of measures, including increasing the size of warnings and banning flavoured cigarettes [RTÉ].

5. #BRAZIL: Protests over teachers’ pay in Rio and Sao Paulo turned violent last night. Masked anarchists joined the demonstrations, setting fires, breaking into buildings and smashing a City Hall gate. Teachers have been pressing for a pay rise for two months.

6. #ANGLO: The special liquidator of IBRC is due to appear in a court in Delaware today to defend an action aimed at blocking the liquidation of the former Anglo Irish Bank in the US, RTÉ reports. An American investor, Paul Singer, claims the process is illegal.

7. #STANDOFF: A man remains in custody today after an eight hour stand-off with gardaí at a house in east Galway on Sunday night. He initially barricaded himself inside, telling officers he had a can of petrol. In the early hours of the morning, officers burst in and rescued him after flames were seen.

8. #MALALA: The Pakistani Taliban have vowed to attack campaigner Malala Yousafzai again, saying she has “no courage”. The teenager has become known worldwide since surviving an attack by Taliban gunmen last year. She is now among the favourites for the Nobel Peace Prize. [Times of India]

9. #SINÉAD: In a fourth open letter, Sinéad O’Connor has written to Miley Cyrus asking for the popstar to apologise for ‘perpetrating abuse’. Yesterday, a Fine Gael TD apologised for comments made on Twitter regarding the singer’s appearance on Friday’s Late Late Show.
