1. #IVF Britain’s House of Lords has approved conception of three-person babies. The process is to be used to prevent incurable genetic diseases. MPs had already voted in favour of the technique earlier this month.

2. #AMERICAN SNIPER Eddie Ray Routh has been convicted over the deaths of ‘American Sniper’ Chris Kyle and another man at a shooting range two years ago. He receives an automatic life sentence.

3. #RICH OR POOR Life expectancy for all groups in Ireland is at an all-time high, says new ESRI research. But manual workers were 140% more likely to die than professionals during the boom.

4. #IRISH WATER A fresh appeal has been launched by Irish Water for landlords to hand over tenants’ details so that they can be sent bills. Meanwhile, a landlords group says it has been seeking a meeting with Minister Alan Kelly for “months”.

5. #AUSTRIA Three men in Austria have undergone ‘bionic reconstruction’ on their hands. They had their injured hands amputated and now have mind-controlled robotic prosthetics.

6. #COMPLAINTS There was a 42% drop in complaints to the Financial Services Ombudsman last year. The majority of complaints were about investment products, while complaints about insurers fell by 49%.

7. #SHAMEFUL Amnesty International says that Western powers have continued to send “huge shipments” of arms to Iraq, Israel, Russia, South Sudan and Syria despite the “high likelihood” that the weapons would be used against civilians.

8. #JAPAN An earthquake has struck southern Japan. It was 5.9 in magnitude and struck 10km deep, the USGS says.

9. #LIGHTING UP Jamaica has passed an act to decriminalise small amounts of pot, and establish a licencing agency to regulate a lawful medical marijuana industry there.
