The Daily PollMultinational retailer Amazon launched its Irish website today.
The company says that Amazon.ie will provide Irish customers with Euro pricing, one-day delivery, “easier returns” and a selection of “over 200 million products”.
Amazon has been criticised repeatedly for its treatment of workers, its environmental impact, and for squeezing out smaller businesses.
Amazon has an Irish workforce of over 6,000 people across Cork, Dublin, and Drogheda.
So today we’re asking: Do you use Amazon?

Can you believe that Amazon Ireland is more expensive than Amazon France / Germany etc.
Another case of them trying to get us to pay more than our so called EU counterparts
Just btw, amazon.ie seems to be more expensive than amazon.co.uk even when taking exchange rate into account, like 8% more or so.
@Shannon Butler: Haven’t transferred over yet from the UK version, but will we have access on the Irish version to everything you have on the UK version? Would be typical of this country though if everything was more expensive!!
@Shannon Butler: hugely more expensive. I get a product delivered every month and with the exchange rate it works out at between €33\€35 every month. Exact same product on Irish site is €56.

@The Firestarter: you can switch over and back, anytime you want. Have noticed none of my lists transfers to the .ie version

@El Sparko: Pretty sure you can’t continuously transfer your prime though. I tried to transfer my Prime from the UK and Germany and it wouldn’t allow it. I think you can do it once here because it is a new location.
Just transferred to Amazon.ie and unless it improves it is way behind the UK version.
Only for items I can’t buy locally, or anywhere in Ireland. Older books or music, or books in Spanish. I don’t want to help exploit workers otherwise.
@Numinous20111: you can find books in Spanish from the wonderful International books store in Dublin. They can order titles of you.
I recently bought a new electric toothbrush. €85 in Dunnes, €35 on amazon.de

I hate myself at times for using Amazon rather than shopping locally but I do so for the price and convenience mainly. Given the political unrest in America recently I’m more inclined to try avoiding Amazon, but it’s difficult when you’re so used to it.
@Boyne Shark: It’s the reason I stopped using it. Bezos has enough money and supports that horlicks.
I’ve bought a few Kindle Books from them but generally I prefer to use either local retailers or eBay.
I didn’t like supporting them because of their horrific labour policies and naked contempt for the environment, even before Baldy Bezos went full MAGA.
People say hang onto our town centres etc…. every thing runs its course eventually we need to take our towns off life support and allow them natural re invent them selfs with ease of planning.
Amazon / eBay saves me time and money , yes I do miss heading into town the banter etc… maybe the odd bargain etc…
But the vast majority of times I had to buy a gift I thought or settle for gift. Now I buy exactly what my mate / fam would want. And I buy less tat.
Just transferred over, with the reduction in Prime membership, it is certainly worth it. One day delivery and good prices.

I do use amazon but only for items I can’t find in person. You can find some good deals on items such as headphones and some more obscure electronic stuff.

Buying local is a rip off its that simple. Amazon offer muxh better prices and way more choice
I use Amazon very frequently. I think it’s a wonderful company that has completely revolutionised consumer shopping. Amazon has helped keep consumer prices so low that the Federal Reserve actually said that they help to lower the inflation rate. I think it’s brilliant that I can buy my Christmas gifts for relatives from the comfort of my couch and I don’t have to go into the city centre and wait in long queues for certain products that are popular. Jeff Bezos has helped create over 1.8 million jobs, including 10,000 right here in Ireland, thanks to his revolutionary idea to fundamentally change the way we shop. He’s also purchased the Washington Post and has transformed it from a left-wing newspaper into one that’s a lot more balanced and supportive of free-market economics.
Took a look and I’ll be sticking with the UK site!

@James T.Kirk: Have you compared the two??. If you are a frequent shopper, the UK site is far better. The Irish Prime price will no doubt be increased in the next six months.
I bought a supposed new samsung galaxy from Amazon. It was sealed when it arrived. Turned out it had been modified jail broke routed. Took all my information when I moved my sim over to it. Informed Amazon. Offered refund but refused to tell me how this could have happened. That company and their phones are still up for sale on Amazon waiting for their next victim. Amazon do not care about their customers or their workers.
We are burning the wrong Amazon. Resist. Techbro go home as they say in Seattle.
Won’t be switching just yet, if at all. Some products I checked are between 30-50% more expensive in the Irish site. I only live a few miles from the border and the daughter is going to join the Irish site, so no need really.
On principle I’ve never used Amazon.
Aliexpress for that type of purchase.

Yes, but Kindle Unlimited is STILL not available in Ireland. Irish customers have been blocked for years.
I went to the local hardware store to support and buy a drill. I asked where are all the drills. We don’t stock them anymore. Try amazon!
