Apple to launch iPad 3 next month - report

The company will debut its tablet upgrade in the first week of March, according to reports.

APPLE WILL LAUNCH the long-awaited ‘iPad 3′ at an event in California next month, according to reports.

Technology blog AllThingsD cites sources as saying the next version of Apple’s tablet will debut during the first week of March at one of the company’s “trademark special events”.

The timing would fit with long-held speculation about the launch of the new device. The iPad 2 was unveiled to great fanfare in March 2011, and Apple has a tradition of annual product updates.

Current rumours around the specification of the ‘iPad 3′ – whose official name is not yet known – are centred on the possible inclusion of a high-resolution retina display, possibly similar to that used on the iPhone 4 and 4S.

Technology analyst Ezra Gottheil told Computer World the screen upgrade was a certainty. “[The next iPad] will have a higher-resolution screen that Apple will call a Retina display, even if it’s not,” he said.
