Part-time contracts are on offer at the retailer’s 40 Irish stores.

Updated 22:59

RETAILER ARGOS IS looking to hire 175 seasonal workers this year to help with the Christmas rush.

Part-time contracts, lasting into the start of next year, will be available at each of the company’s 40 Irish outlets.

The catalogue-based retailer is offering “competitive rates of pay” alongside a staff discount of 10 per cent.

Recruitment is now under way, and details of the jobs on offer are available at www.argoscareers.com/christmas.

I’m applying. I’ll have to travel but I don’t care, I lost my job last week and I’m under 25 so the dole wouldn’t keep me in tea bags to be honest..

I took a seasonal job in Argos one Christmas. Ended up working there for two years during college. Good times and good chance of being kept on.

Yea but for people on the dole now aren’t going to bother even applying because you sign off if you get the job and it’s until the new year and you go to sign back on and get the lower rate what’s the point

In fairness Maggie, that attitude is fostered by the system.
Even with the best will in the world if you only get a job for 6 weeks and then that’s that and it will take an age to get back on benefits (which could be a disaster to endure), why would you take that route instead of staying on benefits?

The systems have to change to encourage work and not punish people for taking some work if they get it.

I think the point would be to get off the dole even for a week. It’s depressing being on the dole and not good for the aul mental health plus its nice to show future employers your a go getter and not lazy and willing to work at anything you can get your hands on. Its nice to have that on your CV I think.

Maggie, I don’t think you’re getting it. The point is that some people can simply not afford to go on the lower rate of dole after the job contract is up, however much they would love to be working, even for the 6 weeks. I know I couldn’t afford to, and all I want is to be a regular, tax-paying member of society.

I agree with you that there are some people who just don’t want to work, but it’s a little misguided to paint everyone with the same brush.

You are all misinformed. You can take up employment having been on the dole, and once you return to the dole within 12 months of taking up employment, you’re rate of social welfare remains unchanged. They aren’t that near-sighted.

Enough of the back and forth here bitches. Make no mistake, everyone of those jobs will have 10 people going for them. At least half of those will be under 26 and they’ll know well that they’ll get a pass off social welfare to do so. Following a six week stint of feeling human again they’ll go back to the bloodbath that is the Irish jobsmarket for grads and recent grads. Anecdotal evidence tells me that there are 75-100 applications for any half decent jobsbridge. Not a job. A jobsbridge. Don’t hate the players. Hate the game.

If I was 55-60 I would be taking a serious look at early retirement. It seems to be the case that going on welfare pays more than working as so many refuse to take a job as they would lose benefits. Do the sums and see what you would have in your hand at the end of the week and it maybe that you are wearing yourself out for nothing and as your pension rights are being ripped off anyway what’s the point in staying at work ?
