Man taken from his house by masked gang and shot in leg

Two men have been arrested.

POLICE IN NEWRY ARE investigating two separate shootings overnight.

The first involved an abduction by a gang of masked men: a 32-year-old man reported that he had been taken from a house at Ardfield Avenue in Warrenpoint sometime between midnight and 1am.

The gang put him into a dark coloured car and drove him to the Armagh Road in nearby Newry, where he was shot in the leg.

In the other attack, a man was reported to have called to a house on Sandys Street in Newry.

After a verbal row, he shot the 32-year-old man who answered the door in the leg.

A blue Volkswagen Passat car was stopped by police in Dungannon earlier today and two men were subsequently arrested. A 28 year old man and 26 year old man were arrested for kidnapping, attempted murder and possession of a firearm.

They are currently assisting police with their enquiries.

Newry, Mourne and Down District Commander, Superintendent Simon Walls said: “We believe the incidents, which occurred in Sandys Street and Armagh Road in Newry, may be linked. We would like to hear from anyone who has information which may assist our investigation. Detectives in Newry can be contacted on 101, quoting reference number: 46 170915.”

“I would appeal for the public’s assistance to help us identify and to take those responsible for these attacks off the streets.”
