Armed robbery takes place at Longford post office

Three females were in the post office at the time. One was later treated for shock, gardaí say.

A FEMALE STAFF member and two female customers at a Longford post office were caught up in an armed robbery earlier today.

Gardaí say that two men armed with a shotgun and a sledgehammer entered the post office in Edgeworthstown just before 2.30pm this afternoon.

One of them broke the security screen and stole a quantity of cash.

One female staff member and two female customers were on the premises at the time. One of them was later treated for shock by ambulance crew at the scene, gardaí say.

RTÉ reports that one of them was taken to Midland Regional Hospital in Mulligar where her injuries are not said to be serious.

The men fled the scene in a silver coloured estate car and gardaí are appealing for witnesses.
