Open Thread: What was the best Christmas present you ever got?

Your first bike, GI Joe and Sindy’s Dreamhouse… what was yours?

CHRISTMAS TIME IS a magical time, the lights, the snow, Santa Claus and carolling.

While Christmas is about a lot more than just presents, often time that one special gift Santa brought and the sheer excitement of tearing of that wrapping paper to see that your letter made it to the North Pole and Santa delivered on his promise, is what sticks in our memory.

So we want to know, what was the best Christmas present you ever got?

To kick it off, we’re going to tell you some of our favourites…

For me, it was girly girl gifts, and it is a close call between Dream Phone, which was a strange board game about dating. The voice you wanted to hear here was “He likes you”.Otherwise it would have to be Sindy’s Dreamhouse. A compact duplex where Sindy lived. It would probably be about €1,200 rent in Dublin prices today.

No brainer, first bike. Kitted out with Spokey Dokey’s from memory (like any true child of the 80s). Hardcore.

When I was pretty young I got a Casio digital watch from my grandparents. It had a stopwatch and a light and EVERYTHING. Holy God, was I excited. Not a thing went un-timed in our house for several weeks.

Mine was probably Baby Born. I played with it for years as a kid and never got bored with it. I even passed it onto my niece and she liked it so much she got one of the new versions last year (the eating, crying and pooping has long stopped in my Baby Born).

GI Joes were always a winner for me.  Didn’t rate Action Man. Once got a sit-on digger which kept me out of my mother’s way and on the sandpit for six hours at a time.

This guy. I got to take it to mass, but my parents hadn’t realised pressing his rib made him roar, leading to a roar during mass.

One Christmas I got an orange Forever Friends playhouse that my dad helped me build (my dad built it). It was the COOLEST THING EVER. I wanted to live in it – I lasted a few hours. Side note: When I was younger everything had to be orange.
Probably a Muppets keyboard I got when I was very young. I’d pretend I could play the pre-programmed songs, natch. There must have been other presents I was excited for (Rollerblades etc) but I know this got years of use. I loved it.
