CHILDREN IN NEED began tonight with a tribute to the late Terry Wogan who presented the charity drive for 35 years.
BBC presenters Tess Daly and Greg James said they would do their best to make sure they did their predecessor proud.
Tonight’s proceedings began with a tribute to the Limerick man, who made the charity night his own with his unique wit and humour, according to his fans on social media.
Others were paying tribute in their own way.
It was Tess Daly who kicked off with a fitting tribute.
She told the audience: “This is our first year without our dear and charismatic friend Sir Terry Wogan. He embodied Children In Need and is someone that we all miss very much.”
James added: “It’s up to all of us to continue his legacy by giving everything tonight.
One of the most powerful things I’ve ever heard anyone say is when Sir Terry signed off his last ever Radio Two breakfast show. He said, ‘Thank you everyone for being my friend’. I think that sums that man up perfectly. He was a friend to millions both on TV and radio. We need to thank him by giving our all this evening.
Celebrities including Eddie Redmayne and Ricky Gervais are expected to appear during the broadcast tonight.
Speaking of Wogan, Redmayne said: ”I have such fond memories of Children in Need; growing up, I loved watching all the special sketches and performances, and, of course, Sir Terry Wogan’s inimitable presenting.”
