Road warnings are in place across the country, with motorists advised to drive safely and slowly.

TWO SNOW-ICE warnings remain in place for a number counties across the country this morning.

A Status Orange snow-ice warning for counties Cavan, Monaghan, Donegal, Leitrim, Mayo and Sligo came into effect yesterday and is valid until this evening until 6pm.

Scattered showers of hail, sleet and snow are forecast this morning particularly along western coastal counties. Highest temperatures will reach just 4 to 5 degrees.

Meanwhile, a Status Yellow snow-ice warning is also in place across Ireland until 6pm this evening.

Wintry showers, low temperatures and frost and ice are all forecast for the day ahead.

Roads

On the roads, motorists are being advised to take extra caution due to the icy conditions.

“If roads get bad later, remember, steer gently, brake gently,” warned the Dublin Fire Brigade.

Drivers are told to reduce speed and are advised to look out for black ice.

AA Roadwatch has issued guidelines for several counties, with motorists being told to drive safely and slowly.

In Donegal, Grainne’s Gap between Muff and Buncrana is impassable.

Road conditions are quite slippery around Buncrana with extra care needed on the Carndonagh Rd and the Derry Rd. The Harry Blaney over Mulroy Bay is also closed due to weather conditions.

It’s also icy in Kildare around Leixlip and Celbridge.

There are also reports of icy roads and conditions in Wicklow, Cork, Kerry, Louth, Longford and Cavan.

The weather is set to become a little milder over the weekend, but will remain cold on Saturday with highs of just 6 or 7 degrees.

By Sunday temperatures should have returned to an average high of 10 to 11 degrees.
