Irish Navy rescues fisherman suffering serious chest pains 225 miles from coast

The Navy responded to a distress call last night.

THE DEFENCE FORCES responded to an emergency call yesterday after a fisherman was reported to be suffering serious chest pains 225 nautical miles off Bantry Bay.

A distress signal was received by the LÉ Róisín regarding a crew man who fell ill onboard a Faroese fishing vessel yesterday evening.

The fishing boat requested that any vessel in vicinity with medical facilities onboard to give assistance.

The Air Corps Maritime Patrol Aircraft had been conducting a patrol when it received a request to provide cover for the duration of the operation. It arrived on scene at 8pm.

The LÉ Róisín was able to transfer its crew onboard the fishing vessel, who assisted with medical care and the transfer of the casualty to the Coast Guard (CG) helicopter.

A Defence Forces spokesman said: “The CG helicopter Rescue 115 was on-scene at 8.30pm and by 9.20pm was en route to Shannon Hospital with the patient.”
