AN IRISH BOXER stabbed in a McDonald’s in Belfast has said he is “lucky to be alive” following the incident.
Caoimhin Hynes was set upon by a group of men after one of them threw a drink at his girlfriend outside the fast food restaurant over the weekend. Hynes received a serious stab wound to his cheek during the incident.
The Holy Trinity Boxing Club middleweight, who had recently won a gold medal at an amateur tournament last week, said his injuries could have been a lot more serious. However, he said he wants to get back training as soon as possible.
A statement on the boxer’s Facebook page read: “I am blessed. Very lucky guy to still be alive. Any lower and things could have been a lot different. What a long day this has been.

“I’m very lucky to have unreal friends, family and definitely girlfriend. I haven’t been able to read anyone’s messages but been told about some of the kind messages that have been sent. I really appreciate it. It means a lot.”
The PSNI said that Hynes was attacked by a “number of males wearing tracksuits”.
A spokesman said: “Shortly before 2.50am police received a report of an ongoing altercation involving a number of people in Donegall Place.
“A 20-year-old male sustained a wound to his cheek after he was assaulted by a number of males wearing tracksuits. He is currently in hospital receiving treatment.
“Detective Inspector Paul Rowland is appealing for anyone who was in the area of Donegall Place and who witnessed an altercation or anyone who has any information that can assist with the investigation to contact them at Musgrave Police Station.”
A number of high profile boxers including Katie Taylor, Tyson Fury and Barry McGuigan have all offered their support to the young man.
