THE DÚN LAOGHAIRE Coast Guard and RNLI had to rescue two people from a sinking jet ski yesterday.
The two jet skiers were not wearing life jackets or wetsuits and were hanging onto the sinking jet ski when they were rescued.
The Dún Laoghaire Harbour Police alerted the Irish Coast Guard to the sinking jet ski in the harbour.
The Dún Laoghaire Coast Guard and Dún Laoghaire RNLI headed quickly to the scene at the old Stena Line berth.
On arrival, they found the two people hanging onto the jet ski which was about 60% under water. Neither was wearing a life jacket or wet suit.
The RNLI inshore boat retrieved the two people from the water.
“This was a very close call tonight and highlights the incredible decisions made by people who risk their lives by not wearing the appropriate equipment or making sure their craft is seaworthy,” a spokesperson for Dún Laoghaire Coast Guard said in a statement on its Facebook page.
In another incident earlier yesterday, two well-equipped jet skiers ventured close to shore at Coliemore Harbour. However, they soon realised their error and departed from the area.
On Saturday, the Dún Laoghaire Coast Guard was dispatched after concerns were raised by swimmers at the Forty Foot of jet skis ‘causing havoc’.
None of the jet ski incidents this week were related, the Coast Guard said.
