Irish couple who founded repatriation charity win £1 million in lottery

The couple’s 26-year-old son was killed in a hit-and-run in New York in 2013.

AN IRISH COUPLE who founded a charity which helps bereaved families bring their loved ones home has won £1 million in the lottery.

Colin and Eithne Bell, who set up the Kevin Bell Repatriation Fund, won the money after playing the Euromillions last week.

The couple, who are from Newry in Down, lost their 26-year-old son in a hit-and-run incident in New York in 2013. The problems which they faced bringing their child’s body home are what spurred them on to found the repatriation trust so that no family would have to endure what they did.

According to their website, the Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust aims to alleviate the financial hardship of bereaved families repatriating the body of loved ones who have died abroad in sudden or tragic circumstances back to Ireland.

Most recently the trust helped bring home the body of Danielle McLaughlin, the Donegal woman who was murdered in India earlier this year.
