Irish GAA player who went missing while swimming in Canada named locally

His family has since flown over to Canada.

SEARCHES ARE CONTINUING for 26-year-old David Gavin who went missing in Canada after going swimming with friends.

The man, who plays with Breaffy GAA club in Castlebar, jumped into the water from a bridge in the Beaver Creek area of British Columbia on Friday afternoon when he disappeared.

A search was launched after his friends raised the alarm.

His family has since headed out to Canada as teams of divers continue to look for him.

CBC News reported that two boats and an underwater recovery team are searching for the man. In a statement, police said the man’s family “have been offered support during this difficult time”.

A spokesperson for the Department of Foreign Affairs told TheJournal.ie: “The department is aware of an incident in British Columbia involving an Irish citizen.”

Members of the community in Castlebar have been offering their support to the Gavin family on social media.

One is local councillor Michael Kilcoyne who said that the community was saddened to hear the news and that they would be offering their support in the weeks to come.
