FIREFIGHTERS HAVE BROUGHT a massive blaze under control that broke out in one of Cork city’s best-known buildings.

The fire was reported after 8.30pm last night at the abandoned St Kevin’s Asylum, also known as St Anne’s, located near the Lee Fields.

By midnight, three pumps, two water tankers and 25 firefighters were on site. Cork City Fire Brigade said that “crews [worked] hard to try and save some of the building”.

It’s thought that up to two-thirds of the building has been destroyed in the fire; photos of the incident seem to show the roof has completely collapsed.

The building, which was closed in 2002, was unoccupied at the time. The cause of the fire is yet unknown.

Locals reacted to the news by saying it was a shame the building was left derelict for so long and that no restorative work was done to reuse the 200-year-old building.

Units of Cork City Fire Brigade remain on scene to monitor what’s left of the structure.
