This year had the warmest summer solstice since 1961

A temperature of 28.6°C was recorded at the Phoenix Park on 21 June.

THIS YEAR’S SUMMER solstice broke records for the hottest temperature recorded in June for the past 56 years.

According to Met Éireann, on Wednesday 21 June 2017, a temperature of 28.6°C was recorded at Phoenix Park Dublin – making it the hottest day in June since 1961.

Other interesting stats for the month include:

  • There was an average of 93.8 hours of sunshine in June
  • The sunniest days of the month were reported at both Johnstown Castle, Co Wexford and Cork Airport with 15.9 hours both on the 18 June
  • The highest daily rainfall was 31.1 mm, recorded at Valentia Observatory, Co Kerry on the 9 June
  • The number of wet days ranged from 12 at Carlow (Oak Park) to 21 at both Newport, Co Mayo and Valentia Observatory, Co Kerry
  • The month’s lowest temperatures were recorded on 26th June with the lowest air minimum reported at Mullingar, Co Westmeath with a temperature of 3.6°C and the lowest grass minimum reported at Mount Dillon, Co Roscommon with -0.6°C.

Thankfully, there were no strong gales or storms reported this month.
