TOURISM IRELAND IN China running a promotional campaign for Game of Thrones aimed at 14 million people to try to entice them to Irish shores.

Teaming up with HBO Asia, Tourism Ireland is running the promotion until the end of August, “reminding Chinese fans of the TV show that Northern Ireland is one of the main filming locations for Game of Thrones”.

The promotion – which an estimated 14 million people will see – is running on five popular online platforms in China, including social networks, a movie news and reviews website and HBO and Tourism Ireland’s own social media accounts.

It will feature a competition, with a chance for five people to win a trip for two to Northern Ireland, which will include a Game of Thrones tour.

The fictional locations of The Haunted Forest, the Dothraki Sea, Winterfell and The Kingsroad are all filmed north of the border.

Large Game of Thrones displays have been set up in shopping centres and next week, Chinese bloggers and influencers have been invited to a video streaming event of Game of Thrones in a centre in Shanghai.

Manager of Tourism Ireland China, James Kenny said:

“Our Game of Thrones promotion with HBO Asia is a fun way to get lots of people talking about Northern Ireland here in China.

Our aim is to spike people’s curiosity about the landscapes and locations featured in the series and inspire them to travel to Northern Ireland and explore them for themselves.

Last month, Tourism Ireland’s Game of Thrones campaign won two awards – a gold and a silver – at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity.

To date, Tourism Ireland’s ‘Doors of Thrones’ campaign has racked up over 30 awards and accolades from the marketing and advertising industry across Europe and the United States.

Following the Cannes awards, Niall Gibbons, CEO of Tourism Ireland, said: Tourism Ireland has been working hard to build awareness of Northern Ireland around the world and we were really pleased to continue our partnership with HBO last year, to highlight the beautiful landscape of Northern Ireland – through the exciting events of Game of Thrones – on the global stage.”
