Body recovered in search for missing Canadian diver

Three days of searches were carried out.

A BODY HAS been recovered in the search for a diver missing off the Donegal coast.

The body was recovered by a specialist diving team and transferred to the Lough Swilly RNLI lifeboat at around 8.30 this evening.

It is understood the body was found on the wreck where the man was diving.

The Canadian man got into difficulty while exploring the Pinto wreck as part of a group on Saturday. The wreck lies at a depth of 65 meters, 17 miles north of Fanad Head lighthouse.

The Coast Guard and RNLI conducted three days of searches before the body was recovered.

The Sligo-based Coast Guard Rescue 118 helicopter, RNLI Lough Swilly all-weather lifeboat and local vessels were all involved in the search.

The Pinto was a convoy rescue motorship weighing over 1,300 tons. It was torpedoed by a German U-Boat in 1944.
