Powerful earthquake hits off the coast of eastern Japan

The quake had a depth of 10 kilometers.

AN MAGNITUDE 6.0 earthquake has struck off the eastern coast of Japan the US Geological Survey has said.

The quake struck at around 5pm local time more than 200 kilometers of the Japanese coast. It has a depth of 10 kilometers.

Japan’s Meterological Agency said the quake does not pose a tsunami risk.

There were no immediate reports of casualties in the aftermath of the quake.

A 9.0-magnitude earthquake in March 2011 triggered a massive and deadly tsunami, which smashed into the Fukushima nuclear power station and sparked the world’s worst atomic accident since Chernobyl in 1986.

Its operator is working to clean up and dismantle the reactors in a process that is expected to take at least four decades.
