Apple gets High Court go-ahead for Athenry: 5 things to know in property this week

Plus a new Dublin home for The Church Of Scientology.

WHETHER YOU’RE RENTING, viewing or buying, it’s always worth keeping on top of the goings-on in the world of real estate.

Every Friday, we round up the most crucial pieces of property news from the week just gone, from policy changes and landlord crackdowns to interesting new builds.

Here’s what’s been happening over the last seven days, starting with the green light for Apple in Athenry…

1. High Court clears the way for Apple’s Athenry HQ

After almost three years of delays, the High Court has greenlighted Apple’s planned €850 million data centre at Athenry.

An Bord Pleanála’s earlier decision approving the 116,00 sq m centre has been upheld, despite local complaints about potential traffic congestion and environmental impact.

2. This Dublin Docklands plot could be yours… for €27m

Fancy owning a slice of Dublin’s dockland district? Cough up €27m and you could be the new owner. The five-acre plot is on East Street on the north side of the river.

Estate agents Savills says that it expects interest from residential and rental funds and developers for the site, which is close to Connolly and Docklands rail stations and the Luas terminus.

3. Budget 2018 measures to yield just 31 social houses next year

In his Budget 2018 speech, Minister Paschal Donohoe said that a total of 3,800 new social houses would be built next year by local authorities and Approved Housing Bodies. On closer examination though, it appears only 31 of those will be builds that were not already previously announced, as TheJournal.ie discovered.

The figure of 3,800 had already been flagged by Housing Minister Eoghan Murphy in September.

4. Scientologists set to open new Dublin hub this weekend

As of this weekend, a refurbished 1,300-seater community centre in Dublin’s Firhouse will become The Church Of Scientology’s largest Dublin hub.

The Church of Scientology in Ireland currently operates out of two small offices, both based in Dublin city centre. Plans to open a Scientology hub on the Firhouse site were first reported by TheJournal.ie back in July.

5. Liam Gallagher’s Weston Airport gig under fire

An upcoming music festival in Lucan’s Weston Airport may be blocked by a court order, if residents have their way.

Former Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher is headlining a lineup that also includes The Strypes and Touts on the final day of the Samhain Festival on Sunday 29 October. Locals have a number of concerns related to the noise levels and the number of people coming to the festival.

And finally, this week’s property buzzword…

We’re simplifying the confusing world of property jargon, one buzzword at time. This week it’s ceiling rose, a decorative circular mounting on a ceiling, through which electrical light wiring passes. Confused? You’ll find an original Georgian example in one of our featured properties this week.
