GARDAÍ ISSUED AN appeal for information this afternoon, as the investigation into last night’s shooting near the Five Lamps area of Dublin’s north inner city got under way.
27-year-old Jason ‘Buda’ Molyneux was shot at James Larkin House in a flats complex on the North Strand at about 9.45pm yesterday.
Investigating gardaí are appealing to members of the public who may have any information in relation to the killing or who may have been in the area of James Larkin House between 8pm and 10pm last night to contact them.
It’s understood that Molyneux died after sustaining a number of gunshot wounds to the abdomen.
He was rushed to the nearby Mater Hospital for treatment, but was pronounced dead a short time later.
Speaking to reporters at the scene today, Superintendent Gerard Murphy described the murder as “callous”, and described how it was happened upon by a Garda patrol.
“This is a callous murder. We need the help of the community to solve this murder.”
Officers stopped to tend to the victim as other emergency services arrived.
A partially burnt-out white Renault Kangoo van with the reg plate 10-D-126064 was found near the East Link toll bridge later last night.
Murphy said that investigating officers believe there was one gunman, who was described as being dressed in dark clothes. Gardaí do not know in which direction he fled and are appealing to witnesses to help them determine this.
‘Not feud related’
Molyneux had a large number of criminal convictions and was an associate of the Hutch gang.
While the Garda investigation is in its early stages, officers believe that the killing may be connected to criminal activity in the Ballymun area and is likely not connected to the ongoing Hutch-Kinahan feud.
Sources today confirmed that Molyneux was not wearing a bullet-proof vest when he was killed. He had been known to wear one. Gardaí also believe that Molyneux had been attending the wake of Derek Coakley Hutch in nearby Buckingham Street and was due to carry the coffin at Hutch’s funeral today.
There was a heavy Garda presence in the area last night as the wake of Hutch, who was shot dead in the west of the city earlier this month, was taking place.
27-year-old Hutch was shot three times at a halting site beside Wheatfield Prison.
His funeral took place this morning at 11am.
Overtime cuts
Speaking in the Dáil today, Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin raised the issue of the recent shootings, and voiced concerns over reports that garda overtime had been cut.
He asked for reassurances from the government that all garda resources necessary were being dedicated to tackling gangland violence.
Martin said the public were watching on in horror at the “murder and mayhem” playing out on Dublin streets.
Justice Minister Charlie Flanagan condemned the recent spate of attacks and said there was no place for such activity in this country.
He said that a live investigation into the shooting is under way and told the Dáil that “no stone will go unturned” in bringing those responsible to justice.
Superintendent Murphy insisted today there was no reduction in resources. He called on the community to trust gardaí and come forward with information.
