Most Irish people think referendum posters should be banned

There’s no authority in Ireland to police the claims made on referendum posters.

THE VAST MAJORITY of Irish people want referendum posters banned, a poll has indicated.

According to a Claire Byrne Live/Amarach Research poll, 74% said yes they should, while 19% answered that they should not. 7% said that they didn’t know whether posters should be banned.

Over 1,000 adults were asked ‘Should posters be banned in referendum campaigns?’

There’s no authority to police the information that’s put on referendum posters to ensure that they’re not misleading and are factual.

Local authorities can only remove posters if they don’t display the printers’ name and address, and the name of the organisation behind the posters.

Yesterday, there were a number of reports of campaign posters that were located too close to polling stations, and had to be removed.

It’s an offence to canvass within 50 metres of a polling station – this includes hanging posters and handing out leaflets.
