In Pictures: Tens of thousands turn out for Women's Mini Marathon

The race was won by Lizzie Lee from Leevale Athletics Club in Cork.

TENS OF THOUSANDS of people pounded the streets of Dublin today in the annual women’s mini marathon.

Around 30,000 women took to the streets of the capital for the event, which took place on a Sunday for the first time in 18 years.

The race was won by Lizzie Lee from Leevale Athletics Club in Cork in a time of 34.18.  Laura Shaughnessy from Dundrum South Dublin AC was second across the finish line in 34.30, and Siobhan O’Doherty from Borrisokane AC secured third place in 34.55.  Sinead Kane from Cork won the Visually Impaired Category in a time of 47.54.

Preparation for the Vhi Women’s Mini Marathon started early in September with a dedicated team working hard to ensure runner safety. They were assisted on the day by 900 stewards from various sports clubs and scouting groups.

Before the start of the race, the Today FM dance troupe led the crowds with 80s themed dance routines, while Today FM’s Muireann O’Connell kept the crowds entertained.
