'I started with the wallpaper and built from there': Colour convert Celine shares her favourite space

Celine O’Malley’s home started off ‘as a white box’.

EACH WEEK, WE ask an Irish person with a passion for interiors about a favourite spot in their home.

Celine O’Malley moved into her Limerick home with her husband and children three years ago after living in Dublin for 15 years.

This week, mum-of-three Celine (@styleatno5) chatted us through the space in her home that she loves the most: her living room.

What do you love most about this part of your home?

This is a pretty dark room because it’s connected to the playroom at the back of the house, but that means it is very cosy. I love relaxing in here when the kids are gone to bed with the stove on, listening to the radio.

The house started as a white box – the painter told me it would look like a hospital – and we’ve gradually added colour. Now, I love the dark blue on the three walls and the grey and copper geometric wallpaper on the chimney breast.

Talk us through some of the objects in the photo.

The desk is used by my husband who is an artist (by night) so we had it built in with the shelves. The stove has been a great addition to the room since we installed it, and I found the writing bureau up-cycled by the Thrifty Chair in Limerick.

The sofa is from DFS, the rug was a wedding present from my godfather in the States and it means a lot to me. The stereo is Denon and has a great sound. Lastly, the printed tile is by a great artist, Alanna Plekkenpol.

What was your inspiration when you were putting the space together?

I started with the wallpaper and built from there. I came across it online, it’s by Erika Wakerly and I loved it instantly. I then tried lots of paint testers until I found a blue shade that I was happy with; it’s Woad by the Little Greene Paint Company. The writing bureau was just a lucky find.

How well does this photo reflect the rest of your home?

It’s a good reflection of where we want to go with our house as we change it from being all white. We started to add colour with dark grey in our sitting room and then blue in here and just before Christmas we went for dark green in our kitchen.

Be honest: how much tidying did you do before taking this photo?

I didn’t do too much tidying, but there was a lot of dusting! The shelves were covered in a blanket of dust. This room stays pretty tidy although, toys do find their way in here from the playroom.
