39 year-old man arrested after houses evacuated over security alerts in Derry

Police said a number of roads are closed to the public as they dealt with the alerts.

LAST UPDATE | 21 Apr 2019

THE POLICE SERVICE OF Northern Ireland have arrested a 39 year-old man after attending of number of security alerts in the city.

In an alert this morning, the PSNI said they were attending a number of incidents at Iniscarn Road, Harty Court, Strand Road and Moss Park.

A number of homes were evacuated and the streets remained closed to the public for a number of hours.

The 39 year-old man was subsequently arrested and was taken to the serious crime suite at Musgrave Police Station for questioning

Police confirmed that they are not investigating any link between these alerts and the murder of Lyra McKee in the city on Thursday night, and say they are treating the incident as a criminal matter.

Shortly after 2pm, police said the security alerts on Insicarn Road and in Harty Court had ended.

Suspicious objects discovered in both areas were examined by the Ammunition Technical Officer who declared them to be non-viable devices, and they were later removed for further examination.

However, police also said that two other alerts, on Strand Road and in Moss Park, are ongoing.
