Arrest made after 21-year-old man killed in HGV Dublin hit-and-run

The collision happened on the Swords Road (N1) at the Collins Avenue junction at around 12.20am.

GARDAÍ INVESTIGATING a fatal hit-and-run involving a pedestrian and a HGV articulated tractor in Dublin in the early hours of this morning have made an arrest. 

The victim has been named as 21-year-old Gerard Whyte, from Ballymun. 

The collision happened on the Swords Road (N1) at the Collins Avenue junction at around 12.20am today. 

The HGV articulated tractor believed to be involved in the incident was turning left from the Swords Road onto Collins Avenue when the collision occurred. The vehicle failed to remain at the scene. 

Gerard Whyte was taken to Beaumont Hospital where he was later pronounced dead. A post-mortem examination is currently being carried out at the City Morgue by acting State Pathologist Dr Michael Curtis. 

Earlier today, Gardaí appealed for information, and released CCTV footage of the vehicle involved.

This evening at 9.24pm, Gardaí issued an update to say that a man in his 50s had been arrested in relation to the incident. He’s being detained under the provisions of Section 4, Criminal Justice Act, 1984 at Ballymun Garda Station.

The tractor has also been recovered, and a family liaison officer has been appointed.
