Poll: Should Irish remain a compulsory Leaving Cert subject?

A review of the Leaving Certificate has found mixed views on the subject.

A REVIEW OF the Leaving Certificate has uncovered mixed views on whether students should have to study Irish as a subject.

Speaking to teachers, parents and pupils, The National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NCCA) found a divide among students surveyed.

Pupils “think that Irish should be an optional subject, whilst some highlighted the importance of retaining at least some exposure to the language for students,” it noted.

One suggestions to come from the consultation was to split the subject and have Irish language and culture compulsory and offer literature as an optional additional module.

So, today we are asking: Should Irish remain a compulsory Leaving Cert subject?

Poll Results:

No (9694)
Yes (9148)
Split the subject with an optional literature component (2499)
I don't know (338)
