'She was the final piece of our puzzle': Siobhan shares the story behind this maternity ward photo

‘When I look at this picture it makes me feel so blessed.’

This week, Siobhan Hogan (@dearestwildone) chatted us through her first photo as a family-of-six.

Tell us a bit about this photo. What inspired you to take it?

This was the incredibly special moment when our three boys met their baby sister Luna-Rose for the first time. I wanted to capture this moment of us all together for the first time as a family of six. They were so happy to finally meet her and I could see that they loved her already – and the treats that they got too!

Quinn, our one-and-a-half-year-old, just kept shouting “baby” and pointing – it was too cute. He was no longer the baby and he looked like a real little boy compared to Luna-Rose. We were so overjoyed that we had another healthy baby, the final piece of our puzzle to complete our family. When I look at this picture it makes me feel so blessed, lucky and proud of our amazing tribe.

What’s one thing that’s going on in this photo that you wouldn’t know from looking at it?

Luna-Rose was delivered into this world by a planned C-section day before. I was so nervous in the theatre but everything went very smoothly and I had no complications thanks to the amazing staff at the University Maternity Hospital in Limerick. I had been very nauseous afterwards so I was glad to be feeling a little better when the kids arrived. I felt a thousand times better after a hot shower and a bit of makeup.

Although you cannot see it in this picture, I was very anxious as the midwife had discovered that Luna-Rose had a severe anterior tongue tie when she was born. Tongue tie makes it difficult to breastfeed as the baby may not be able to open her mouth wide enough to latch on to the breast and seal the latch. Luna-Rose required a tongue tie release in order for her to feed effectively.

Did it take many attempts to get the right shot?

We had such a short time frame to get this picture as my husband Kevin was trying to contain Quinn, while the boys were chomping on their treats that they got for taking another sibling under their care. I like the fact that it’s not perfect though. They are always the best ones in my opinion.

Do you have a family photo from Instagram with a great behind-the-scenes story?
