'The circus idea came from some Cath Kidston wallpaper': Corinne shares her baby's colourful bedroom

‘I’ve since had the lampshade in this room made with fabric in that very pattern.’

EACH WEEK, WE ask someone based in Ireland with a passion for interiors to share one photo of their favourite spot in their home.

Corinne Delahunty moved into her semi-detached 1950s house in Co Waterford with her husband in June 2018.

“When we moved in, the house had been uninhabited for quite a while,” says Corinne. “It was previously owned by an elderly lady and had no insulation or central heating. The wiring was a fire hazard and the place hadn’t been decorated in decades.”

But this lady had raised her family here. Even though the house was small and needed untold amounts of work, we liked the idea of rescuing a family home and making it our own.

Corinne explained, “I’m very lucky that my husband is incredibly good at DIY and did everything in the house himself apart from fitting the windows.”

This week, Corinne (@the_pink_tardis) chatted us through her favourite spot: her eight-month-old son Theo’s bedroom.

What do you love about this part of your home?

It belongs to my favourite tiny person in the world! And, it’s the room I would have loved to have had as a child. There are actually quite a few things in here that were mine as a child, such as the purple sun plaque that my mam made me when I was little. I love whimsical and magical details and I’m completely obsessed with colour. I think that’s captured pretty well in this space.

What’s your favourite object in here and why?

It’s a toss-up between the handmade patchwork blanket that my grandmother made for my little boy (which includes a square knitted by my great grandmother before she died) and the balloons, which are from my favourite shop in the world, Finders Keepers. It’s the most magical shop here in Waterford run by the loveliest people.

What was your inspiration when you were putting this room together?

The room is circus-themed but also heavily inspired by the hot air balloons from Finders Keepers. The circus inspiration came from some Cath Kidston wallpaper I saw years ago and I’ve since had the lampshade in this room made with fabric in that very pattern. I’ve kept the walls grey so they’re not fighting for attention with all of the colourful accessories.

Be honest: how much tidying did you do before taking this photo?

Not too much, actually. Theo can’t crawl just yet so the amount of mess he can make is thankfully limited at present (except at feeding time!).

Is there anything in here you’d like to change?

As with lots of older houses, the walls are quite uneven which irritates me a little, but I guess that’s also part of its unique character.
